1852   Capital punishment abolished in State.

           Normal School opens in Providence.  (becomes a State institution in 1854, and is presently Rhode Island College.

1853    Newport incorporated as a city.

1861    First Rhode Island Troops leave for Civil War.

1863    Bryant and Stratton Business School opened (became Bryant College in 1935)

1864    First trains runs from Boston to Newport.

1865    End of Civil War.

1868    Providence Board of Trade organized, name changed to providence Chamber of Commerce in 1913

1869    United States Naval Torpedo Station established at Goat Island.

1870    State Board of Education established.

1871    Betsy Williams dies, bequeathing Roger Williams Park to the city of Providence.

           LaSalle Academy in Providence founded. 

1872    Providence Opera House built (demolished in 1931).

1873    Steamboat ferries put into operation between Jamestown and Newport.
